- Compuserve does not send two or more files at once. What Golden Compass
- does is download the messages to be read at full speed into files. You then
- interact with the message reader and those files. While reading, you can
- compose replies or new messages which will be sent at a later time (normally
- at your request but it can be based on a timed event you set up). While you
- are reading and writing messasges, you can have another part of the program
- downloading files from the libraries. You can be reading messages from
- one forum while it completing the job of getting messages from the other
- forums on your list. Another useful feature is that you can ask it to
- download the message headers and then based on the subject line, ask it
- to download the full text of the messages you select. Golden Compass
- is inspired by TapCis. One of the basic philosophies of both is that
- all online activity (unless you select to go online interactively) is done
- as fast as possible with human interaction being done offline. This is
- in strong contrast with CIM from Compuserve which gives you a nice (opinions
- vary) user interface but keeps the connection up while you are reading,
- writing or interacting and the online charges keep mounting. By using
- the multitasking feature of OS/2, Golden Compass allows you to be doing
- one thing while some of the online operations that you've requested are
- being completed.
