- Your startup problems sound familiar to me. I have a 486 EISA machine
- with an Adaptec 1740. I couldn't get Windows 3.1 to work in enhanced
- mode without enabling Windows double buffering until I got Adaptec's
- latest fixed version of aspi4dos.sys. Adaptec's upgrade utility made
- it for me, and its directory entry looks like:
-
- ASPI4DOS SYS 10900 04-18-92 12:00p
-
- It is version 3.0a, and you can get the upgrade through a clever method
- Adaptec uses to protect their licenses. There is an executible program
- freely available from Adaptec which checks for its various software
- packages and decripts and applies upgrades for those it finds. I got
- the program from Adaptec's bulletin board system, but considering your
- internet address, you may want to try your local Adaptec dealer, or some
- anonymous FTP site.
-
- With the new driver and the following fragment in my config.sys, all is
- now well for me.
-
- stacks= 9,256
- device = himem.sys /eisa
- device = emm386.exe /noems
- device = aspi4dos.sys
- dos = high,umb
-
- I hope this helps.
