- IMHO, there are 2 ways to go with DOS right now -- either DR-DOS 6.0
- or MS-DOS 3.30. A few hassles I've had with DR's offering have
- annoyed me: "slow" floppy drives [why, BTW?]; problems with TaskMax
- and my keyboard; others I forget now. For the rest, it's great,
- and the disc cache utility impresses me greatly.
-
- The best thing about it is that it gives me everything I'd get from
- MS-5 and *lots* more -- but it still seems to work fine with all
- the "old" PD/freeware utils I've picked up along the way. No
- SETVER hacks, and none of the bitching I heard from my colleagues
- when they moved from 3.30 to 5.0. Great with Windows 3.1, too.
-
- BTW: I have a little utility which lets me swap between MS-3.3 and
- DR-6.0 as I please [IO.SYS & MSDOS.SYS first in the root; IBMIO.COM
- and IBMDOS.COM elsewhere; two boot sectors and a little boot sector
- dropper program; a pair of CONFIG.SYSs to point to the requisite
- COMMAND.COM; a REBOOT utility]. Interestingly, most of the cool
- utils from DR-6.0 work fine under MS-3.30 [eg: SUPERPCK, UNDELETE
- and EMM386.SYS]. Of course, my drive is partitioned into C, D, E and
- F -- but that's how I like it, anyway.
-
- Buy DR-DOS 6.0. I doubt you'll regret it. [Or ditch DOS altogether :-)].
