- I finally got the SLS 98.5 version installed and working correctly...
- Thanks to all those people who told me to get the new A3 disk with the
- dev.tar file on it. That solved most of my problems.
-
- More specifically it solved the problems of no /dev directory, which also
- fixes that hanging at boot up. (if there is no /dev directory, there is no
- /dev/tty* thus, there is no terminal to log into :)
-
- I also got lilo to install correctly by recompiling the kernel again with
- my configuration. I.e. change the Makefile to point to my root partition
- and other compile time options, and then move that file to /etc/Image and
- adjust the /etc/lilo/install script to point to that image.
-
- I believe that the problem that I was having with before with lilo was that I
- was trying to run the Image generated from the SLS distribution, and that
- Image was not correctly setup for my machine. Therefore when I recompiled the
- new image and used that for lilo it worked correctly with no problems.
-
- Now for a new set of questions.....
-
- 1) Why is it that things seem slower now than before. I.e. it takes longer
- to boot up the machine, it takes longer to start Xwindows (a lot longer...
- actually) and in general it just seems to lag a while. I thought that
- perhaps the disk caching wasn't working correctly, but I couldn't find a flag
- or swich in the Makefile for it. Is anyone else seeing this problem?
-
- Thanks.
