- Just a brief note about my experiences with upgrading to 0.98pl5. Ever since
- 0.98pl3 or so I'd had a minor problem with Linux not finding my third serial
- port on bootup (I could set it to a particular interrupt with setserial, but
- this gave a "type unknown" message). The problem was minor since at the
- moment I'm not using the third serial port for anything, but upgrading to
- 0.98pl5 cleared it up.
-
- Now the bad news. The upgrade broke my TeX and MGR binaries, but I suppose
- I had it coming . . . they were both way overdue for replacement. TeX was
- easy enough to fix by getting new binaries. MGR was a bit more of a problem.
- I got the latest source (version 0.51) on tsx-11, and recompiled. This
- produced LOTS of error messages, but after a few minor hacks I got a usable
- binary--in fact more stable than the old one (I did have to make it suid
- to root to run it as a normal user--otherwise it dies with a "couldn't get
- I/O permissions" message.) My one real complaint is texmgr: even after
- recompilation, it refuses to run under 0.98pl5. I suppose it does something
- no longer permitted under the New Order, like writing to the text segment.
- A pity, since I'd like to have a TeX previewer and haven't the disk space
- or video equipment to make X worth the trouble. Of course I could always
- buy a new computer . . .
