- I'm thinking about getting a dos box solely to run linux. I'm a
- relatively experienced unix (well, AIX) user, and am hoping linux can
- provide me a home hacking environment for X and such.
-
- Unfortunately, I'm just not that familiar with the ms-dos computers and
- so am unsure exactly what I should be looking for in a dos box. When I
- stop in at various retail outlets, most have systems that look like
-
- 486SX/33, super VGA card, 14 in. super VGA monitor, 4 Meg ram,
- 107 Meg hard drive, 3 1/2 in.floppy.
-
- How confident can I be that linux will run on that sort of system (and how
- usable will X be on a 14 in monitor?) I do plan to boost to 8 Meg.
-
- What sort of questions/specifics should I be asking about the hardware,
- that is, is there a list of specific cards that will the linux X port works
- with, is the kind of hard drive important? Is a 486DX/33 a (much) better
- CPU to get? What about a 486DX2/50 ?
-
- I'd be looking at PS/2's as well, but from the FAQ it looks like MCA is a
- no go.
-
- Since I'm sure this isn't of interest to the group at large, follow-ups are
- directed to me. If you'd like a copy of what I find out, send a note and
- I'll be happy to send you a summary.
-
- Thanks for any advice and tips you can give.
