- Ok - here is the deal. I am looking at two different machines.
- Both are from the same company (Gateway 2000)
-
- 486-66DX2 Local Bus 8 Meg Ram, Local Bus IDE controller, 340
- meg IDE drive. 15" flat screen monitor. Local bus ATI Ultra Pro.
- Desktop case. Both floppies, all the regulars, etc.
- ($2995 +$100 for tower case, +$95 for shipping) $3190
-
-
- 486-33DX EISA 8 Meg ram, EISA Adaptec or Ultrastor SCSI controller
- (supports DMA, and bus mastering, but not a caching controller). 500 meg
- SCSI drive. 14" monitor. ISA Diamond Speedstar 24X. Tower case. Both floppies,
- all the regulars etc.
- ( $3495 +$95 for shipping) $3590
-
- I plan on running Linux and Dos (I have games). I plan on adding
- a sound card to do some composition in the future, and would also like to
- be able to do full-motion video sometime in the future.
- Also, I plan on writing some pretty heavy-duty engineering code
- (Lots of CPU, Mem, and Disk required) at some point.
-
- So, to the chase. If I get the Local bus machine, it will arrive
- within the next 3 weaks (or so they say). I am too short on funds
- however, to get the EISA machine - I would need to wait till the price
- comes down at least another $400 (or till I win the lottery ;-). Is the
- better disk performance, and more 32-bit expansions spots worth the
- extra wait (who knows how long). Also consider that the EISA machine
- has a lesser video card and monitor, and is a DX33 instead of a DX2-66.
-
- I am looking for opinions here - what do you think I should do?
- Does anyone know of another company that has a better deal, and still
- has a good service reputation?
-
- Bruce

- P.S. Oh - and also, any other company would need to take Discover ;-)
