  13. Sigh...  In the time allowed me by my busy research schedule and computer-
  14. jealous girlfriend, I have been attempting to get a working configuration
  15. of Linux on my home PC, mainly to run fortran programs, and do word 
  16. processing in LaTeX, under X.  After figuring out a lot about this very
  17. nice system over the last two weeks with SLS (containing 0.98pl1),  I notice
  18. that the new SLS with 0.98pl5 is out and there are a whole bunch of changes
  19. over there.  And supposedly Linus going to bring out 0.99 in two weeks?!!
  20. How do I catch up?

  22. Specifically...
  23. Is it better to 
  24.     a)  apply 0.98-patch1, -patch2, -patch3, -patch4, -patch5 and remake
  25.         my kernel,
  26.  
  27.     b)  get the tsx-11.mit.edu:pub/linux/sources/system/linux-0.98.5.tar.Z
  28.         and make that
  29.        (and having done either (a) or (b), where do I put this stuff.  
  30.         Is there an appropriately named README on this?),
  31.  
  32.     c)  after updating the kernel using either a) or b), then pulling in
  33.         all the patches for t1-5, x4-8, assorted a's, b's, and c's, and
  34.         trying to get them all installed one by one,
  35.  
  36.     or
  37.  
  38.     d)  get the entire SLS dist. again and reinstall (with the
  39.         corrections just mentioned by pmacdona@sanjuan.uvic.ca, of course).

  41. Being something of a non-computer-science person, it is a little frightening
  42. to change one thing at a time, since I am never quite sure if I am doing
  43. something that will break the system.
  44.  
  45. While I am baring my soul, I have some other questions:
  46.  
  47. 1) Can LILO allow the option of choosing either a DOS or Linux boot _during_
  48. the boot process, or do I have to use BOOTLIN?  How do I actually make BOOTLIN
  49. work (that would be tolerable)?  Do I have to put more options on the line
  50. in my CONFIG.SYS?  E.g.
  51.  
  52.     DEVICE=C:\BIN\BOOTLIN.COM C:\BIN\LINUX098.PL1 [more options?]
  53.  
  54. What should I be starting BOOTLIN with... a copy of the Linux Image, or what?
  55. And why is it that the BOOTLIN documentation sometimes mention BOOTLIN.SYS, 
  56. but the ZIPfile actually comes with BOOTLIN.COM?  Isn't the DOS (gag) convention
  57. to have a .SYS file in the CONFIG.SYS file?
  58.  
  59. 2) Does the latest SLS emacs now come with at least /usr/emacs/info/dir, so that
  60. even though the main online documentation is missing, other info files can be
  61. read through emacs (they *do* come with SLS, after all :-> ) ?.

  63. 3) Should I just go with what I have for now, and wait for Linux 1.00 to come
  64. out?
