  12. I am currently in need of a UNIX operating system to run on my 486DX which has
  13. 4Meg of RAM and 105MEg Hard Disk with 3.5" and 5.25" high density floppies.
  14. The system runs at 33MHz with a Multi sync NEC 4FG monitor with mouse and a
  15. 2400 baud Fax/Modem.

  17. I am trying to run a VHDL compiler and simulator and also a Logic simulator
  18. called GALAXY both of which run on UNIX.
  19.  
  20. I was wondering if some one from this group could tell me if LINUX is a usefull
  21. OS for what I want to do and if so is it fast enough ie. faster than DOS etc.
  22. or not.

  24. I also am confused about what files etc I need to download from the linux ftp
  25. sites so I would be greatfull if some one could assist me with obtaining the 
  26. correct files required.

  28. In case you may be wondering why I need to use these programs I am undertaking
  29. a PhD program here at the University of South Australia in the field of design
  30. and diagnostics of Electronic Systems in an intellegent environment. So it is
  31. very important for me to get up and runing with the CAD packages I mensioned
  32. and hence I would be extremly greatfull to any one who could assist me with
  33. choosing, and installing LINUX as a free UNIX operating system on my 486.
