  10. I'm trying to determine appropriate timing information
  11. for the "VGA-compatible" LCD display on my NEC ProSpeed
  12. 386. Neither the owners manual nor the maintenance manual
  13. give this information. Has anybody actually gotten X working
  14. on one of these? I've tried bringing up the monochrome
  15. server, using the clock rates of 25 and 28 MHz (which is what
  16. the server returns) and the official VESA timing for VGA.

  18. X comes up, but the display is essentially trashed (dark
  19. vertical lines moving randomly when the mouse is moved), with
  20. either a gray stipple pattern in the left 2/3 of the display area
  21. or pure white in the left 2/3, depending on the "cursor" is located
  22. (some experimentation with xterm has confirmed that the "pure
  23. white" pattern is displayed when the cursor is located within
  24. an xterm window, and the stipple pattern is displayed when it's
  25. not). In all cases, the right 1/3 of the screen consists of thin
  26. vertical lines. This suggests (to me) that my timing information is 
  27. way off. Where do I go from here?
