- Hi,
-
-
- I am buying a machine which I am very excited about running
- Linux on. The following is the hardware configuration of the
- machine.
-
- - 486 DX/33 ISA Bus
- - 8 MB 60 ns memory
- - 256K Cache RAM 20 ns
- - 213 MB Maxtor IDE drive
- - No Cache on Hard disk controller
-
- I don't believe any hardware so far would cause any problems.
- What I am really confused about is the video. The following
- is the video hardware.
-
- Mother board: JointData
- OPTi chip set / AMI ROM BIOS
- 1 Proprietary Local Bus video slot
- Video Board: JointData
- Model: Local Bus/ G-Host S3 (Not sure VESA support)
- Chip: S3
- Monitor: Samsung 15" SyncMaster 15
-
- I want to run X-Windows on this machine. Does Linux support
- Local Bus? Is there a driver which can handle this video
- configuration already written? If these video option are not
- supported using X-Windows will using ASCII mode still work?
- Is the X-Windows support full or partial (color/monochrome)?
-
- I am purchasing the above system for under $1900.00. I think
- this is a good price but if someone has a better price I
- would love to here about it.
-
- Also would appreciate any comments on buying a 486 SX/25
- instead of the 486 DX/33. I will using Linux mostly but will
- also run Windows and will use a CD/ROM some for my kid.
-
- Thanks a ton,

- Ps. I did read the FAQ but did not see Local Bus addressed.
