- I noticed that Michael Johnston made the comment that the new version
- of Emacs prepared by Rick Sladkey would not work on a pre-0.98PL4
- kernel. From what Rick indicated this would not seem to be correct. The
- new binary should work under new or old kernels but the old binary would
- fail to work under new kernels.
-
- I download 18.59 and tried it on our production kernel which is a
- non-SCSI 0.96-PL6 and it seems to function properly. I started BASH
- user shell mode since I knew that this used pty's and everything seemed to
- work as it should. Perhaps I am only lucky????
-
- I would be interested in hearing of any reports where 18.59 fails on
- a 0.96-PL6 kernel. I will not move Emacs onto our production machines
- until I know that we will not have problems.
-
- The 18.58 binaries should probably be extinguished as rapidly as possible
- since they used an inappropriate technique for handling selects, it is
- my understanding that that is the reason why the kernel changes broke the
- binary. I would hate to see people refrain from upgrading due to false
- assumptions of improper functioning on non-0.98-PL4 kernels. Comments???
