- Hi.. a friend just got the 0.97 SLS release (I think that's the version)
- and we are having MAJOR problems.
-
- (1) He has a 486dx and a Diamond SpeedStar SVGA card. We have tried
- getting X386 up and running, but either get nothing (i.e. blank screen)
- or we get something that looks vaguely X-ish (i.e. we see an xclock,
- etc.) but everything on screen is all weird -- my friend said that it's
- in the wrong video mode, and propmtly turned the machine off --
- apparently this is harmful to the monitor. Can anyone help?!@?
-
- (2) We having MAJOR problems with passwd. First of all, the adduser
- command in the "menu" appears to get the UID and GID backward!! Is this
- true? Also, all our UUCP accounts (different logins for various
- machines) have the same UID and GID (this is always the way I've done it
- on my other machines) , but whenever you change the password on one of
- them, ALL of the password entries conforming to that UID change. This
- is not good. Is there any way of fixing this (i.e. getting a new passwd
- program, etc.)
-
- Also, a MAJOR problem is that, for some odd reason, users' passwords
- frequently get "corrupted". Let's say I'm logged in as "dburr". I
- change my password to "Foo". I log out, call back later, The password
- "Foo" DOESN'T WORK, AND MY ORIGINAL (OLDER) PASSWORDS DON'T WORK EITHER.
- This is very bad, especially for the root account!! Is this another
- bug, and if so, how do I fix it? (i.e. where can I get updated source,
- binaries, etc.)
-
- (3) Does this release of Linux support SLIP? Also, does it support
- TCP/IP >without< an Ethernet board? I'd like to get some stuff going on
- this machine (i.e. Berkeley syslogd, Berkeley talk, etc.) which requires
- TCP/IP and sockets functioning, but they do not require the ability to
- connect to stuff outside of the machine. If this is possible, how do I
- get it set up? (also how do I set up SLIP)
-
- Anyway, thanks for the help. Please email replies to
- dburr@sbphy.physics.ucsb.edu. THANKS!!
