- In re MIDI smear: There are, I would hazard, far too many variables in the
- average sound chain to be able to lay blame for MIDI delay on MIDI itself. From
- the sequencer program through to the sound module itself, there can be many
- culprits causing audible delay... While MIDI accuracy has been discussed in many
- venues (see Keyboard and Electronic Musician magazines for some of these
- discussions), MIDI smear is less frequent than many seem to believe. Yes, MIDI
- will have problems with multiple simultaneous glissandi (although maybe not if
- the data were sent out separate MIDI ports?), but more often the problem of
- audible smear results from delay in the sound generating equipment response
- time, or the response time of the actual patch selected. In *most* cases, it
- should be possible to find a way to eliminate the problem.
