- I found an interesting item in the "Trends" section of the latest PC Magazine.
- This describes Video for Windows, which is Microsoft's answer to QuickTime.
-
- It's just a half-page article, but here are some of the important points:
-
- * Open technology. Includes standard codecs for Indeo (software implementation
- of Intel's DVI) and run-length-compressed movies. Run Length Encoding
- format is intended for playback on lower-end machines (such as consumer
- systems), Indeo for more powerful ones.
- * Includes a new "revamped-for-video" Media Control Interface (MCI). Adds
- OLE server capabilities to allow pasting of video sequences into other
- documents.
- * Includes sound/video synchronization that is "every bit as good as Apple's".
- * Has some capability for importing QuickTime movies.
- * AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is supposedly the name of the file format.
- * Includes VidEdit (editing) and VidCap (capture) and other tools.
-
- It's supposed to be shipping sometime this month, for US$199.
