  10. I found an interesting item in the "Trends" section of the latest PC Magazine.
  11. This describes Video for Windows, which is Microsoft's answer to QuickTime.

  13. It's just a half-page article, but here are some of the important points:

  15. * Open technology. Includes standard codecs for Indeo (software implementation
  16.   of Intel's DVI) and run-length-compressed movies. Run Length Encoding
  17.   format is intended for playback on lower-end machines (such as consumer
  18.   systems), Indeo for more powerful ones.
  19. * Includes a new "revamped-for-video" Media Control Interface (MCI). Adds
  20.   OLE server capabilities to allow pasting of video sequences into other
  21.   documents.
  22. * Includes sound/video synchronization that is "every bit as good as Apple's".
  23. * Has some capability for importing QuickTime movies.
  24. * AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is supposedly the name of the file format.
  25. * Includes VidEdit (editing) and VidCap (capture) and other tools.

  27. It's supposed to be shipping sometime this month, for US$199.
