- In the book "Peopleware" (which I think should be required
- reading for anyone managing programmers), they suggest the
- "audition". A candidate is asked to make a presentation on
- a topic of their choice, so long as its technical in nature,
- and preferably related to the job being offered. The presentation
- is made to the team that will be working with the candidate. It
- should take 30 to 60 minutes, and at the end of the presentation
- the candidate has to field questions.
-
- This is an excellent test of a person's ability to communicate
- technical information, and gives everyone in the team a say
- on the candidate.
-
- Another item mentioned in the book is a protfolio. I've
- put together one for myself that contains samples of code and
- documentation that I've written. I personally think a portfolio
- would be a better measure of a programmer than a pop quiz.
