- I am a junior at The Pennsylvania State University, and utill recently I
- have felt that overall MIS/IS was a very strong degree to have. Since I was
- very young I have been interested in computer systems, and technology so there
- really was no question in my mind when I found the MIS major. What I have
- seen though forces me to question Penn State's view's of the program.
- The first 'problem' occurred last spring, while I was scheduling for this
- fall semester. Less than one week before scheduling was to be completed we
- (MIS majors) received a mailing containg a new course outline for the Jr. &
- Sr. years. Roughly two classes were eliminated or restructured. I was upset
- because I was close to turning in the schedule I had (which had courses that
- did not exist). The next setback was three weeks into this fall when we
- received another course change. A course was renamed and new Support of the
- Major courses were added (Quantitative Business Analysis).
- To confuse the situation, I had begun interviewing for an Internship
- through the College of BA Internship Program. These positions start in Jan.
- and I would have to miss the Spring '93 semester. My professor strongly dis-
- agreed with missing the spring semester. It seems they were not sure when
- these classes could be offered again. On the left people tell me"you can't
- pass up an internship"on the right it's " don't miss the spring"...
- Now, yesterday, in the 12th week of the semester a student asked if some
- rumors of the MIS major being eliminated we true. The answer--yes. They
- are turning it into a minor so all business students can get the vital
- info. The major will be eliminated. Where does this leave me?
- I have asked if I will be able to graduate and I get no guarantees.
- Should I take the internship and hope for a job offer upon graduation?
- Is the Univ. policy a good one? Any thoughts/answers/solutions are apprec.
- Thanks.
