Hi,

I'd like to know if there already is software to read/decode/vizualize
Photo-CD images on (SUN) workstations, and I'd like to know any experiences
with this new medium.

After reading some stuff on the subject, and after a demo, I start to
believe that Photo-CD, is going to play a major role as a standard for
distribution of high-quality colour images across computer networks.
The main reason for this believe is the nice fact that these CD's can be
read on all 'new' CD-type players, including computer-CD.


In short: A photo CD can be made at the local shop for a low cost (here in
Holland Dfl 1.50, approx $1) per image. A disk contains up to 100 images,
images can later still be added to an existing disk. 5 image files per
image are available on the CD, in resolutions between 192 x 192 and 2000 x
3000 bits, each 24 bits deep. Kodak has put a lot of effort in
accuracy of the color encoding scheme. The max resolution represents
the approx resolution of a ASA 100 colour negative film. These
Photo-CD's can be read on a CD-I or Photo-CD player, but also on most
computer-CD players. It is this last fact that makes me really happy.

Now I would like to hear experiences, and if there is already somebody who
has software to read, decompress, convert these images from Photo-CD

Also I'd like to hear your opinions on my assumption that this is going to
be a major standard for bitmapped image files.
