- You CAN'T CAN'T CAN'T do a mirror surface in #3-d studio version 2 because
- it CAN'T raytrace!!!!!! It does casting (ray-casting?) of the objects to
- determine colors but cannot reflect true ray-traced obejects or rays.
- It can do a "fake-out" raytracing, where the object on the side of the ball
- is "rendered as another picture" then mapped onto that side of the ball.
- I forgot exaclty what that is called. (Perspective mapping?)
- This is why 3ds is so fast. If they added raytracing (I think they should
- at least have a link to Renderman) it would look great but slow way down.
- Most (original use) uses of 3ds was for walkthroughs of archiv
- architecture. Raytracing is just a waste of cpu time and disk space.
- When you come down to it, 30 fps o
- doesn't require super-raytracing. If there was a way to only raytrace
- every 5th from
- frame or so (sorry for all the typos, no backspace in my vt100 emulator)
- if you qcould raytrace every 5th frame or so, you could see the detail.
- I don't know if this could be done or if it would even work...
- (should we branch off here and discuss that idea seperately?)
