- HOOPS Graphics Development System Grants for Educational Institutes
-
-
- ALAMEDA, CA - Copy of our HELP Grant press release - Ithaca Software, the
- developer of the HOOPS Graphics Development System, recently announced an
- aggressive grant program for Educational Institutes that can use HOOPS for
- teaching computer graphics, graphics programming courses, or as a development
- tool in academic research projects. Under the terms of "HELP" Grants, or HOOPS
- Educational Licensing Programs, universities
- and colleges that meet the criteria established by Ithaca will receive
- HOOPS software, documentation, and annual update support.
-
- Over 150 leading colleges and universities are licensed HOOPS users,
- including Cornell University, Massachusetts Institute of
- Technology-Project Athena, Simon Fraser University, Carnegie Mellon
- University and the University of British Columbia.
-
- "Many graphics programmers employed today by major software development
- organizations learned their programming skills at schools that use HOOPS
- for teaching computer graphics," stated Stephen F. Mendel, Ithaca's
- President and CEO. This announcement today further expands our
- commitment to colleges and universities of all disciplines."
-
- "Since 1987, HOOPS grants from Ithaca Software have provided essential
- support for our work in developing high-end interactive applications for
- teaching engineering," stated Kate Mink, Director of Project SOCRATES
- (now a project of the Synthesis National Engineering Education Coalition).
- With software that's available world-wide, it's particularly important
- that programs be portable and maintainable; HOOPS graphics code is both.
- Its declarative, object-oriented structure is also ideal for teaching
- students about graphics concepts."
-
- "Typically, due to budget constraints, schools were forced to only use
- what was provided by the hardware supplier," stated Glen D. Vondrick,
- Ithaca's Vice President of Sales. "These solutions are not portable
- and do not take advantage of programming paradigms desired by the
- software developers who will eventually serve as the students' employer.
- Through an expanded HELP Grant program, college and universities will
- be able to expose students to modern programming tools that integrate
- with the technology of the 90's, such as Windows, PEX, GL, NT etc. "
-
- HOOPS has been licensed by leading software development organizations
- such as Autodesk, Computervision, SPSS, and IMSL to produce high
- performance 3D portable software applications for CAD/CAM, science,
- medicine, and education. Over sixty commercial organizations have
- licensed HOOPS for development of hundreds of next generation products
- on PC's and Workstations. Many of these applications are already in
- use at colleges and universities.
-
- "The most startling thing about HOOPS is how easy it is to use. I am
- not a graphics specialist, yet I was able to write interactive HOOPS
- applications immediately," stated Paul Boutin, Systems Programmer,
- Massachuetts Institute of Technology.
-
- Ithaca Software introduced HOOPS at ACM Siggraph '86. Since 1987,
- HOOPS has been licensed to thousands of software developers at more
- than 500 commercial and 150 academic sites. HOOPS was the first 3-D
- graphics tool system to support X Windows, DOS, Macintosh and OS/2
- platforms. It is the only system capable of producing advanced graphics
- applications across the entire spectrum of engineering workstations
- and personal computers. In 1988, HOOPS won a Digital Review Target
- Award Nomination. In 1989, HOOPS received BYTE magazine's Award of
- Distinction. In 1990, the company moved its corporate headquarters
- from Ithaca, New York to Alameda, California.
