- I've been listening in on this newsgroup since I received my new Cardinal
- 14.4k v.32bis fax-modem. It seems that many people here bash the Rockwell
- ASIC chipset. I am not a proclaimed modem expert, but the experience
- I have had thus far with this modem has been excellent. Using the
- specific commands Cardinal specified in their manual has resulted in perfect
- operation. I am able to connect with 1200baud - 14,400 baud modems with
- one initialization string.
-
- Furthermore, the included, (although extremely buggy) QuickLink II Fax
- software could be excellent if some changes were made (I'm speaking of the
- Windows version) All of the FAXes I've recieved were at 9600 baud.
- I haven't had any slower ones yet. The windows software can automatically
- differentiate between data and FAX calls.
-
- This modem does have a NS16550AFN UART, and is so reported by MSD and other
- verification tools. On this 486/33, I routinely get ~1700 cps connections
- to other v.32bis [TwinCom modems on EXEC-PC], sending ZIP files with v.42bis
- error correction. I can multi-task in Microsoft Windows -- play CPU
- intensive MOD files, write documents in Microsoft Word, and download using
- QMODEM 4.2F using YMODEM-G, simutaneously.
-
- Connections to USR modems are somewhat slower, but only about 50 cps. I
- have not been able to definitively compare this with line quality, however,
- so I'm not sure if the USR modem is the problem.
-
- Connections to v.32 modems are flawless as well, connecting here at the
- univeristy consistenly at v.42bis. The 2400baud and 1200baud lines connect
- at their respective rates just fine. With long distance calls, I have
- NEVER experienced a data carrier lower than 14.4k when dialing a 14.4k
- system. Granted, I have tried only a few systems, some using Zoom,
- USR, and PPI modems.
-
- In all, I am very pleased with this modem. I was not particularly pleased
- with the SERVICE that Zeos Int'l gave me, when I ordered it, but that
- didn't surprise me. Zeos sold this modem at $195, internal only. You
- can't really beat that.

- When I started fooling with the registers and other commands, I got into
- trouble and the modem wouldn't connect in cases < 14.4kb. However, when
- I re-entered the suggested init code, all returned to normal. I'm really
- pleased with this modem, and pleased with the Rockwell Int'l chipset
- that drives its faaaassssttt speed and loooowww price, with nnnnooo problems.
