I just got a chance to look at the current(?) issue of PC magazine - Cover:
"Upgrading your system" It seems that again PCmag has not given USR a fair shake.
They did not include transfer totals for any USR modem, because it wouldn't work out
of the box. They had to do some messing with the init string. When's the last time
you bought a new piece of hardware (or software, for that matter) that didn't take a
little twiddling to optimize?
Also, the reported that the BlastFAX software was under par. So what, buy Faxability
PRO! I agree the software isn't the best, but I doubt it's worse than Quicklink II
(The comm software SO good, you can only get it with a cheap modem! :)
In the actual write up, they say that the "modem is hard to set up with comm software
- you have to select that particular modem from the configuration, and you can't use
the comm program defaults." Boy, that's tough. Three or four mouse clicks...
I don't know why PC mag doesn't like USR, but the in the last review (a year or so ago) I seem to remeber a poor review, also. Anyone else read this article?
Even if I wasn't a satisfied Sportster owner, I think I'd think twice about the Supra
being a better modem - PC mag's estimate. Opinions?
