-
- As far as modems for Compaq go, take a good hard look at Megahertz.
- They make very, very nice products and provide an excellent value,
- usually far above what I see from other makers on the market. They
- make generic modems, but their specialty seems to be modems and
- fax/modems for notebooks and such machines.
-
- They make a full line of modems and fax/modems designed exclusively
- for the Compaq LTE, Lite, and Contura lines. All are internal and can
- go from bare-bones 2400 to a full-power 14400 with fax. I've used
- them on my machine for two years with no problems. They're
- sweethearts. I've also sold about ten of them to customers and had no
- problems from those either.
-
- In reference to the net's comments about what is "good" operation, I
- do both initiating and answering calls. Lots of file transfer,
- sometimes uninterrupted use for as long as 48 hours. Nothing
- unattended other than file transfer. Lots of fax. Use both domestic
- and international. My modems (plural) have been the closest damn
- thing to "plug-and-play" I've ever seen in my life. No problems, no
- hassles, ever. Megahertz tech support and customer service are also
- very, very nice to me every time I call.
-
- My only, ONLY complaint is that the software bundled with these modems
- is not the best. Yuck!
-
- Their 14400 is, I believe, the only one made to be internal for a
- notebook in the PC world. The only other similar product that I know
- of is a 14400 internal for a PowerBook by Global Village Comm.
-
- Their 14400 is also "cellular-ready." I understand that to mean that,
- given the optional cellular interface, it will connect to a cellular
- phone and work fine. Note that this confidence is based on their past
- performance.
-
- Can't give you actual use reports yet, since mine should be arriving
- sometime next week. But one of the first things I'll do is to hook up
- to the mainframe from the car, then send a fax to Central America. I
- want to see this thing...
-
- BTW, this is a product that has just hit the market. I.e., it was
- released only a day or two ago. The only reason I knew about it and
- ordered it beforehand is that one of my suppliers put its listing into
- their database, thinking no one would notice.
-
- For reference's sake, I'm speaking of the Megahertz C5144 Fax/Modem.
- I don't work for Megahertz, I've never even seen any of them face to
- face. I'm just a thoroughly delighted customer, and I'm also a
- retailer who has sold their products and had them turn in wonderful
- performances for my customers as well.
-
- Take a look at it... it should be well worth your time.
