- In my experience, "long distance" is a can of worms.
-
- Each number you call gives different results, and calling the same
- number at different times of day gives different results. If the
- system you are calling has a hunt sequence, the only way you can be
- sure you are getting the same modem on the other end is to dial the
- last number in the sequence. Note that it's not just the modem you
- are using/calling, but the ROM version that has to be taken into
- consideration. And of course the long distance carrier can make a
- difference.
-
- For what it's worth, if you want to try a Telebit 3000 with ROM
- version LA 3.00, you can try Aegis at +81-75-957-2488. It's the last
- on the hunt sequence so you will either get BUSY or a CONNECT. After
- the CONNECT you will get a banner that includes the local date and
- time in Kyoto, Japan the line (=ttyaC), and the speed of the port on
- the answering machine (38,400 under error correction, speed of the
- modem<->modem link otherwise).
-
- If you only want to try the CONNECT, enter 'bye' at the Login:
- prompt to have the answering machine hang up. If you want to try
- throughput, enter 'aegis' at the 1st Login: prompt, and 'new' at the
- 2nd Login: prompt to register a default account. At the ---Main:
- prompt you can use the "FEEDBACK" command to send mail to the sysadmin
- (I would try at least 30-60K to get any kind of reliable figures).
- And you can use the "HELP TEST" to get 31,050-byte test file sent
- to you.
-
- Hope that helps,
-
