- I don't agree. In my experience, a lot of users are just too easily
- satisfied with a bad product, or they're unaware of poor performance.
- For example, a while back somebody recommended USR modems and indicated
- that his worked "fine". So I e-mailed and asked what he meant by "fine",
- and what kind of use he gave them. He responded that his company had
- purchased 12 modems, 8 worked on arrival, they shipped the others back
- for replacement, got 3 more working ones, and then finally a third replacement
- for the last modem. They were in daily use in a modem pool, used exclusively
- in answerback mode by local callers. And they were "fine".
-
- Now to me, that would be a pretty poor product (75% of the new items are
- functional on delivery), and he certainly didn't give it much of a test.
- I think a lot of people just ignore features they don't need or don't want
- to learn to use, so they don't comment on how they work. If you don't know
- the entire testing background, the comments are pretty worthless.
-
- An earlier posting on the Intel 400 modem from one person indicated that
- it had "slower throughput" than a USR modem. Yet he didn't say a word about
- under what conditions it was measured, what the numbers were, and what
- protocols were being used. So the information is basically worthless. But
- you can bet that some people will tell their friends that Intel modems have
- worse throughput than USR just based on that one statement.
