- V.25bis is a local protocol between your computer and modem which
- allows software to dial a phone number -- similar to the AT command
- set, but much more limited. It has nothing to do with the end-to-end
- connection between the modems. If your software can generate AT
- commands (asynchronously, I presume), and the modem supports a mode
- in which AT commands are accepted async and the modem switches to
- sync after it connects with the remote modem, and you have both
- async and sync ports on the computer and an A/B switch to select
- between them, then it should work. If you want to run it only with
- a sync port, you'll need software that supports V.25bis and a modem
- that supports V.25bis. If you want to run it only on an async port,
- you'll need a modem and software that supports Hayes AutoSync or
- something like it (that converts from async to sync within the
- modem).
-
- Since he's connecting it to a mainframe, your best bet is probably
- going to be to get a modem that supports V.25bis (synchronous
- dialing commands) and connect to a sync port on the computer.

-
- I don't know about Supra. Sync operation is a fairly "high end"
- feature, and many of the less-expensive V.22bis modems do not have
- it. Hayes Smartmodems, 2400bps and above (all kinds) support sync
- operation and Hayes AutoSync; the Ultra modems (Ultra 24, 96, and
- 144) also support V.25bis.
