- Better is a subjective matter. In your opinion better means more compression.
- There are currently two programs (archivers) which are best (in compression)
- abd common usable. ZIP 1.9 (from InfoZIP not from PKWARE) and ARJ 2.30. They
- are about equal on compression.
-
- Even better compression can be achieved with HPACK (available on garbo BTW).
- It is slower (but not extremely) and still a complete archiver.
-
- If only compression matters and you can live without an archiver the
- Ashford is the best compressor in existence. It is also the slowest (and
- I am 99% sure you ain't going to use it of you see HOW slow). Also
- notice Ashford sometimes failes to compress a file (it has some bugs).
- The same applies to e.g. PKZIP 1.10 but Ashford failes much more often.
-
- Ashford source is part of my own LDS_10 package.
- Please also notice the FAQ has more detailed figures on compression
- comparissions.

- Locating the comp.compression ==> FAQ <== :
- * The FAQ is posted often to comp.compression and should also be available
- on news.answers as "comp.compression Frequently Asked Questions".
- * The FAQ is also available by anonymous ftp on rtfm.mit.edu [18.72.1.58]
- in directory /pub/usenet/news.answers/compression-faq, files part1 and part2.
- * If you don't have FTP access, you can get the FAQ by a mail
- server. Send an email message to mail-server@pit-manager.mit.edu
- containing the command "help" (no quotes) for more information.
- * If all above REALLY fails, request the files from nevries@cc.ruu.nl
- Locating lossless data compression ==> SOURCES <== :
- garbo.uwasa.fi /pc/programming/lds_10.zip contains most known sources
- for lossless data compression.
