  31. SUBMISSIONS
  32. Authors should prepare full papers, in English, of not more than 5000 words
  33. including references, approximately 20 double-spaced pages. The title page 
  34. must include: author's name, postal address, e-mail address (if applicable), 
  35. telephone and fax numbers; a brief 100-200 word summary; some key words for 
  36. classifying the submission.

  46. HISTORY AND AIMS
  47. PACLING (= Pacific Association for Computational LINGuistics) has grown out of 
  48. the very successful Japan-Australia joint symposia on natural language 
  49. processing (NLP) held in November 1989 in Melbourne, Australia and in October 
  50. 1991 in Iizuka City, Japan.  
  51.  
  52. PACLING '93 will be a low-profile, high-quality, workshop-oriented meeting 
  53. whose aim is to promote friendly scientific relations among Pacific Rim 
  54. countries, with emphasis on interdisciplinary scientific exchange showing 
  55. openness towards good research falling outside current dominant "schools of 
  56. thought," and on technological transfer within the Pacific region.
  57.  
  58. The theme of PACLING '93 is "transcending language boundaries" by facilitating
  59. communication between speakers of different languages and by going beyond 
  60. limitations of natural language as a communicative medium -- the conference 
  61. has a particular interest in the theory and practice of natural-language 
  62. centred multi-modal architectures, systems, interfaces and design issues.

  84.       mice, light pens, graphics (including animation);
  85.     language and context, e.g., from the subject domain, discourse, spatial

  89.     computational linguistic, multi-modal but natural-language centred;
  90.     formal, knowledge-based, statistical, connectionist; 
  91.     dialogue, user, belief or other model-based;

  95.     text and message understanding and generation, language translation 
  96.       and translation aids, language learning and learning aids;
  97.     question-answering systems and interfaces to multi-media databases 
  98.       (text, audio/video, (geo)graphic);

  102. PUBLICITY AND LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS
  103. The conference will take place at the downtown Vancouver extension of Simon 
  104. Fraser University.  Preferential rates have been negotiated from downtown 
  105. hotels at $Canadian 43, 65 and 82 per person per night.

  107. Conference fees will include a banquet and a day trip by coach to Whistler, a 
  108. picturesque local mountain and ski resort.  For further information on the
