- With all this talk (and opinion) on beer, I thought I would post some
- reviews of a few of the beers that have been discussed here. These were
- written by Michael Jackson, and they appear in his book _Pocket Guide to Beer_.
-
- * Typical of its country and style
- ** Above average
- *** Worth seeking out
- **** World Classic
-
- Colorado Beers
- _Boulder_ Pioneering micro. Although its beer is available nationally,
- it is not as well known in its own local market as it should be.
- The brewery has a tasting bar and lunch room. Regular products
- are a fruity, dry Extra Pale Ale **; a sweeter Amber *->**; and a
- roasty, complex Porter **->***. Seasonal specials include a tart
- Tanker Ale **; a Black Cherry Porter (not tasted); and an intense,
- characterful Stout***.
-
- _Walnut_ An early 1900s post-and-beam building on Walnut St, in the down-
- town area of Boulder, Colorado. This brewpub makes a lightly tart
- Swiss Trail Wheat Ale **; a soft, full-textured, dry, hoppy Big Horn
- Bitter ***; a smooth, clean Old Elk Brown Ale **->***; and a creamy,
- roasty Devil's Thumb Stout **->***.
-
- _Odell_ Decorated with sun signs and terracotta, this micro-brewery is
- in a former Mexican tile shop underneath a grain elevator in
- Fort Collins. Products include a perfumy, dry-hopped (with Saaz)
- Wheat Beer **->***; a malty-fruity Golden Ale **; and a smooth, nutty,
- Scottish-style Ninety Shilling ***.
-
- _Coors_ The cleanest-tasting mainstream American brew is the one simply
- called Coors **. It also has enough maltiness, just, to remind
- the drinker that is is not pure Rocky Mountain Spring Water. Indeed
- some of its rivals currently seem lighter in body. Coors also makes a
- Light *; a faintly fruitier Extra Gold *; a faintly hoppier Herman
- Joseph's *->**; a distinctively malty, seasonal Winterfest **->*** in
- broadly Vienna style; and George Killian's **, an amber lager that
- is intended to evoke an Irish Red Ale.
-
-
- To compare to some of my favorites:
- Bass: Worthington's "White Shield" Fine Burton Ale ****
- Whitbread: Gold Label ***
- Anchor: Anchor Steam Beer ****
- Paulaner: Original Munchner Hell **->***
- Kaiserdom: Rachbier ***
- Schultheiss: Berliner Weisse **** <---Fantastic with rasberry syrup!
-
- Some I have not tried, but may be of interest:
- Leinenkugel: Leinenkugel **
- Limited *->**
- Bock *->**
- Anchor: Liberty Ale ***->****
-
- I highly recommend this book for any beer lover. If you don't want to pay
- for it directly, you could acquire it the way I have...by consuming 50
- different beers at Old Chicago.
-
- Cheers,
