- Strange as it might seem, I think the same number is assigned! I had
- assumed for years that there must be some "serial" component to the
- drivers license number, to prevent duplications. I had assumed that
- Illinois drivers license numbers were unique, like SSNs. (OK, it has
- happened that duplicate SSNs have been issued, but very rarely and
- always by mistake.) I think two people meeting all the following
- criteria would have the same Illinois drivers license number:
-
- 1. Same first letter of last name
- 2. Same Soundex encoding of last name
- 3. Same first letter of first name AND some additional as yet unknown
- requirements. The gaps in the "first initial" number table I posted
- are not yet completely understood (by me).
- 4. Same first letter of middle name
- 5. Same birthdate (or 100 years apart!)
- 6. Same sex
-
- This doesn't seem all that improbable, not in a state the size of
- Illinois. I think it must have occurred at least once. Yes, twins
- (either identical, or same-sex fraternal twins) would match criteria
- 1, 2, 5, 6 in almost all cases. Given the propensity in some families
- to name everyone with the same initials, it's not at all inconceivable
- that criteria 3 and 4 could also be met. I'd like to find two such
- people.
