- The fallacy here is that you are taking the US retail (which already
- includes profit margin etc) and adding yet another another 1/3 gross
- margin.
-
- A better bet would be to assume local margin is about comparable to
- the US:
-
- 4295 / .68 (Aussie dollars!) ~= 6329
- Shipping (*): 500
- Aust theoretical RRP (ex tax) 6999
- Actual rrp ~9500 ex, or ~11,400 tax paid.
-
- (* this is for airfreight; I bet it would be less than that by the
- containerload)
-
- Now the most expensive 486DX66 I have seen in the Green Guide is
- around $5k tax paid, or well under half the cost of the Classic. How
- can they possibly claim these things are price competitive? Add
- Solaris (for < $1k) and you are running the _same_ software, and still
- about half the price!
-
- All of which indicates that the local prices on these units are
- probably dicsountable, unlike the U.S.
-
- As an aside, I was very, very impressed with the architecture of the
- SS2000. Comes with 256Mb of RAM, minimum! Not cheap, but.
