- Trish, REAL WOMEN are used in ads, but they are usually represented in
- the "before" shots in "before and after" ads, you know the ones - "I used
- to look like this(sloppy and fat) but then I used such and such and now
- I'm a beauty queen",
- or the nutri system ad where the REAL WOMAN is shown all sloppy in
- sweats and keeps returning to the scale only to have the speaking scale
- berate her for being ugly and pathetic when finally after using
- Nutri System she is transformed into a size 8 and returns to the scale
- in a black mini-dress and is obviously going out to get laid whereas
- before Nutri System she couldn't get a man.
-
- Anyway, the problem I see with the fellow quoted above is that he equates
- REAL WOMEN with being ugly, sloppy, and pathetic and I think that some ads
- perpetuate this idea. In ads REAL WOMEN are portrayed in the worst light,
- in pictures they are photographed to appear even larger than they actually are
- and don't have all of the models tricks such as how to stand to
- look their slimmest.
-
- This is not to say that all ads use REAL WOMEN in this light; as one other
- poster pointed out it is all a matter of casting and this subsequently
- depends on who the target audience is. So, as in the Lands' End catalogues,
- the models are supposed to represent REAL WOMEN because for Lands'End
- the target market is REAL WOMEN because their product is for REAL WOMEN.
- Notice these REAL WOMEN don't look slobby etc...because that would not
- suit the purpose of the advertiser. On the other hand, to suit other purposes
- ads will make the look of the REAL WOMAN appear undesirable so that the
- consumer will buy the product so they can look more like a beauty queen or
- get laid whereas they couldn't before when they were just a
- real woman(as in the NutriSystem) ad.
