- I know this won't do any good, but I must sound off. I'm tired of this crap.
-
- Too many people are name calling and using old, tired stereotypes:
-
- * Liberal = Democrat = socialist/communist.
- * Conservative = Republican = Fascist/Fundamentalist.
- * Libertarian = Social Darwinist/Anarchist.
-
- This is crazy. People identify with a particular group because *overall*, all
- things considered, that group *most closely* matches their beliefs. In almost
- no case is it true that their beliefs are EXACTLY matched by a particular
- group and/or the official positions of a group. If we insisted that a group
- or political party had to match a person's beliefs 100%, then we'd have about
- 100 million political parties in this country.
-
- Pat Buchanan and Bill Weld are both Republicans. Tell me how much they agree
- on social policy.
-
- Pennsylvania governor Robert Casey and Ted Kennedy are both Democrats. Tell
- me how much they agree about abortion.
-
- People who identify themselves as Libertarians bicker constantly among them-
- selves. There is the extremist anarchist fringe who bitterly oppose even a
- slight modification of the party platform, and there is the more moderate
- Libertarians who advocate less government, but not the near-zero government
- of the anarchist group. I've been to Libertarian Party functions--I know that
- the battle over the wording and hard-core nature of the platform is a constant
- source of disagreement. Tell me that *they* agree on their platform.
-
- People who engage in stereotyping based on party affiliation or basic ideology
- are missing the boat. I know people who are extreme liberals--bordering on
- socialists--except that they are pro-life. Yet to hear many of you speak out,
- people like that don't exist. If you are an X, then you are Y. That just
- doesn't wash, and it doesn't allow for the individuality that we as human
- beings all have in common.
