- Actually, I probably should not have said "limped." I think they
- put out some very good music during the post-Green years, starting
- with Kiln House and Bare Trees. I believe Jeremy Spencer was on
- Kiln House (1970?) after the departure of Peter Green which I had
- always thought was *prior* to Spencer's exit. (Can't figure all
- this out without a scorecard, I guess). I think Cristine McVie
- plays uncredited on both albums.
-
- Danny Kirwan appeared on both albums. I always thought his stuff
- was great, too. Generally, it had a "sweet" sound that is hard
- to describe. His intrumental "Sunny Side of Heaven" from Bare
- Trees is very mellow and haunting.
-
- Kiln House contains some great rock-and-roll parodies that Spencer
- was especially good at. "Tell Me All the Things You Do" is just
- a wild, busy song that is typical of late '60's/ early '70's rock.
-
- There is a photo inside the Then Play On album (and CD) which
- has an outdoor photograph of the band with probably its best
- lineup. Uncredited, left to right, it shows Jeremy Spencer,
- Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green, John McVie, and Danny Kirwan in 1969.
- Green looks very youthful and energetic. No hint of things to come.
- The CD, by the way, has 2 Kirwan songs not included on the album.
- I have no idea where they came from, though.
-
- Bob Welch's "Hypnotized" is probably the only thing during this
- period that got any airplay. A hypnotic song indeed. I think his
- "Emerald Eyes" was later re-recorded for solo release.
-
- Then along came Buckingham and Nicks and they really went through
- the roof. But this immensely popular lineup - formed around 1975 -
- has little or no resemblance to the original band.
-
- So does anyone know if Jeremy Spencer is still in the Child of God
- cult and if Danny Kirwan is still around anywhere?
