- Yes, a number of people do wrap themselves up in recovery. But one of
- the main things to remember is that everyone comes in from a unique
- situation. Soe no longer have jobs, family, friends, etc. Some
- haven't been in touch with 'reality' for quite some time. One of the
- advantages of sharing my experience (instead of my 'wisdom') is that
- it will manly affect only those who find some common ground with my
- story.
-
- Another thing: some people wrap themselves up in the fellowship
- instead of the program. I know people who haven't had a drink in 10
- to 20 years who've never worked the Steps (their statement, not my
- guess.) ;-) Some people go for years without quite grasping that
- working the Steps is (1) possible, and (2) something they should get
- moving on. Sometimes it takes another 'bottom' to get them to look at
- the Steps.
-
- I don't have a lot of friends outside of AA partly because I'm
- attracted to alcoholics and if I'm going to hang out with alkies, I'd
- as soon they be sober ones. 'Normies' often don't approve of my
- program since I didn't get sober through 'willpower' -- I relied on a
- program, which isn't the American way. They seem to have their own
- insecurities. ;-)
