- |>"The Autobiography of Malcolm X (As Told To Alex Haley)."
-
- Not a big deal, but James Baldwin wrote the screenplay 10 years
- |ago as a book (available in book stores, and called "When The Chicken
- |Comes Home to Roost"). It was based on HIS OWN ideas, accounts, and
- |knowledge of Malcolm.
-
- I know all about the James Baldwin script, but aren't you confusing it
- with the Tony Brown-produced "When Chickens Come Home To Roost"?
-
- The script for _Malcolm X_ was written by Spike Lee BASED ON
- |the Baldwin script and Alex Haley's book and many other sources, including
- |family members.
-
- Yep.
-
- People find that very important because, ultimately, if the movie
- |does not do justice to Malcolm's life, Spike is to blame, NOT Baldwin
- |or whoever.
- | I really hope the movie is what Spike says..."a masterpiece".
-
- Right. I hear it's damned good tho'. He's certainly seemed to have
- won over the mainstream critics, if Newsweek and S&E are
- representative.
-
- As a film student I had the opportunity to work at 40 Acres and
- |a Mule (Spike's production co.) in Brooklyn as an intern this past
- |summer. The movie really looks great. I saw it get edited, and saw the
- |soundtrack get put on, etc. etc., and I have to tell you this:
-
- | ...the film opens with a voice-over of one of Malcolm's most
- |famous speaches as we see the Rodney King beating footage intercut
- |with an American Flag. Back and forth, until the flag bursts into
- |flames, which spread upward, to form an "X"...
-
- So I've heard. Is it as gorgeous as it sounds?

- Peace.
