- Matthew Arnold 19th century English (Victorian) writer, literary critic,
- philosopher, of a sort, wrote a long treatise called "<something
- ?Barbarians?> and Philistines" where Philistines were people who pretended
- to be cultured but in fact had no proper appreciation of either arts
- or culture (*his* opinion of course!). For some reason his use of the word
- seems to have come down through the English Language and still gets a
- mention today.
-
- Peeve> We were forced to read a long tract of this for O'level English
- at school and also large quantities of his poetry (best known for Dover
- Beach).
-
- Further peeve> I don't remember anything about it at all - now I'll
- have to go and reread it!
