- Naah, you guys have it easy. Let me tell you about _real_ hand
- trouble. Real hand trouble is when you are born with a mild
- skin condition and spend the next twenty-five years on a solid
- course on the most powerful topical steroid preparations known
- to medical science. What starts as dry skin and a rash escalates
- as the palms of both hands, and some of the fingers, are reduced
- to the state of scar tissue -- thin scar tissue. If you wash your
- hands with soap, your skin dries to the consistency of parchment
- and bits of your hands drop off. If you lift something heavy
- with edges sharp enough to leave visible grooves in your hand,
- you bleed through your skin over the next week. If you use the
- wrong detergent, it feels like your hands have been immersed in
- a tank full of Mace or CS or some other vesicating agent.
-
- You know you've got Real hand trouble when you go through a week
- when your hands resemble bleeding lumps of raw flesh on the ends
- of your arms, and it's an improvement over the week before
- because none of the open sores are more than an inch long or a
- quarter-inch deep. And then you get carpal tunnel syndrome on
- top of it all ...
-
- (Have a nice sprain! :)
