- What a lot of people don't realize is that when you call someone, the ringing
- you hear is *not* their phone! The ringing you hear is generated internally
- by your own phone's circuitry; the phone company is not going spend billions
- of zorkmids for special cicuitry to route the callee's ring signal back to
- you -- your phone "knows" that the other phone is ringing and thus generates
- a ring for you to listen to, but you do not hear the actual ring of the other
- phone. "But," I hear someone say, "whenever I call Lesbo A-Go-Go, the sound
- of the ringing there is distinctly different than when I call The Squirrel
- Cage." I do not know the answer to that, but my guess is that it's due to a
- different impedance on the line.
-
- Exactly, Dave!
-
- The impedance is decreased as Big Brother attaches his alligator clips
- across the line. Hear that little click? That is the voice activation of
- the government's recorder.
-
- You should consider honking a portable boat horn into the receiver to
- clear out any cooties, before you actually start the heavy breathing.
