  34. It may interest you that in Hinduism we have the concept of
  35. ArdhaNarEshwara, which means that the Supreme is represented by half-man
  36. and half-woman. Theer are ancient sculptures showing this divine figure
  37. - in those sculptures the partitioning is done along the vertical axis,
  38. as  i dimly recollect the left side is female and the right is male.
  39. Hermaphrodites obtain a special relationship in certain parts of India
  40. as a consequence.

  42. But this is only the approximation. In the highest Vedantic monism, the
  43. Supreme, is all-encompassing, without attributes, though all attributes
  44. flow from It. Thus the Divine, referred to as Aum, is Nirguna (without
  45. qualities).

  47. About 25 centuries ago, people started asking what was the point of
  48. worshipping the Divine if it had no qualities. This led to the
  49. establishment of materialistic philosophies such as Charvaka which
  50. ridiculed the Vedas and Vedantas and Brahmans in particular, and also
  51. atheistic religions such as Jainism and Buddhism.
