- I'm glad you asked this because it made me think about what I meant
- originally. Perhaps there are 2 issues here: 1) am I capable of killing,
- and 2) am I willing to use a gun to kill?
-
- Yes, I am capable of killing to protect myself or my family. However,
- I'd do a lot of things short of killing first--like avoiding danger, then
- trying to deflect or escape an attacker. I'm willing to fight for my
- family if all else fails, and if it ends in death (for me or the
- assailant) before I can escape, so be it. I would hope that my family
- would escape while I distracted the attacker if ganging up wouldn't be
- effective.
-
- As for the second issue, I still don't want to own a gun. It's too
- quick and too easy to kill with a gun. I've fired one before, and even
- though I was targeting popcans, I didn't feel good about it. I don't want
- that kind of instantaneous life-and-death power in my hands! Once you've
- pulled the trigger, there is no turning back, and I'd feel unsafe with
- that kind of power in my house.
-
- The above may sound illogical and irrational to some. I make no
- apologies because I find the fact that I could be shot and killed by a
- total stranger for the $5 in my wallet to be pretty irrational too. I
- choose to not participate in this arms race!!! Other people make
- different decisions, but this is mine.
-
- I repeat my earlier statement that my views could change if I became the
- victim of violent crime. Sometimes it's hard to balance ideals and
- actualities when one is specultating :-)
