  26. The Russians withdrew from Afghanistan years ago. The groups are fighting
  27. each other, and the government, now. It was predicted that as soon as 
  28. Russian support was withdrawn that the government would collapse, but
  29. it didn't.

  31. However, we smuggled the Afghan rebels all sorts of high-tech portable
  32. weapons during the Russian phase of the war. To see unarmed civilians
  33. versus a well-armed if unofficial army, look at Bosnia. The Serbs have
  34. access to the weapons of the former Yugoslavian government. Those
  35. fighting them, especially the Muslims, have whatever they can scrounge.
