  12. What is the OOO, you might ask?
  13.  
  14. Basically, we are a group of people (many are college students)
  15. who have formed this really twisted organization.
  16.  
  17. The reason for the name is that we humorously ask our members
  18. to "self-deify" and choose a title for themselves when they
  19. join.  For instance, I am the Director of Physical and Non-physical
  20. Phenomena.  Another member is Arch-chancellor of the Unseen
  21. University.  It is all quite harmless, really.  We do have some
  22. members who also belong to organized religions such as Christianity,
  23. so we are not "ungodly" or blasphemous.
  24.  
  25. Since December, our focus has been to stir up debate on the
  26. issues of the environment, politics, and the military.  The
  27. first issue we discussed was a nuclear test-ban.  Near Jan 1,
  28. the charter members put out a set of "platforms" for people
  29. to debate. For further information on the debates, see the
  30. post "Debate Guidelines."

  44. Your first task as a new member is to pick a title
  45. for yourself.  This title should be as creative as
  46. possible, and should not be in conflict with another
  47. member's title, and also should not be too power-hungry.
  48. All titles must be approved by the charter members.

  51. membership list.  Read through and try to get a feel
  52. for the title concept.

  54. What must you do to become a member?  Well, just pick
  55. a title for yourself, and send mail to
  56. jester@sage.cc.purdue.edu telling him your title, real name,
  57. and shoe size.

  59. The OOO attempts to be somewhat politically active,
  60. so please try to get involved in the debates (see
  61. the post entitled "Debate Guidlines" for more info).
  62. Also, try to read the YAQOTD posts (Yet Another
  63. Quote Of The Day) - not only are they funny, but
  64. they may contain other important information from
  65. jester.

  67. About E-mail: members don't mind getting E-mail from
  68. you if it's directed to them, but don't send mail to
  69. everyone - that's what this newsgroup is for!

  71. In the past, long .sigs have been shunned, but with
  72. a newsgroup (rather than a mailing list) they are
  73. probably more apt to be tolerated!

  75. Now, a little bit of OOO trivia (which is far from trivial,
  76. and you ought to know these things!):

  78. The Line of Succession: In the new world order which the
  79. OOO has created, power is on a first-come, first-served
  80. basis.  You will be assigned a number which represents
  81. your "height" on the pyramid.  Those above you are more
  82. powerful than yourself, those below you less so (in some
  83. abstract sense).  HOWEVER, the final authority IN ALL
  84. MATTERS lies with the three charter members.

  86. Recruitment: Please recruit as many people as possible!
  87. In order to sign someone up, have them read alt.overlords
  88. for a while, and get a sense of the organization.  If they
  89. want to join, have them follow the same process you are!

  91. NOTE: We are no longer keeping track of who recruits who -
  92. it is just too tedious for the accountants!

  130. For those of you who are FTP buffs, there is an anonymous
  131. FTP directory set up on cco.caltech.edu called pub/bjmccall/
  132. which has some interesting stuff, including a spiffy Mac-ized
  133. version of the OOO symbol with a decent-looking eye.

  140. To carry on the debates that will hopefully take place on
  141. the newsgroup we ask that the following guidelines be followed.
  142.  
  143.   1.  That you read the articles pertaining to a specific debate
  144. before jumping in to give your opinion.  What you have to say
  145. may have already been said, and repetition is not appreciated.
  146.  
  147.   2.  That if you want to attack specific points in another
  148. article, that you print who has said them.  It will allow
  149. the debates to proceed more smoothly.
  150.  
  151.   3.  If you present ideas which are not your own, such as
  152. from alternate newsgroups, reference sources, etc. that you
  153. make all possible effort to give credit to the source.
  154. This is mostly to allow the rest of the organization to do
  155. their own research on the subject.
  156.  
  157.   4.  Though this will probably not happen, do not let personal 
  158. bias against another member influence your reaction or opinion.  We
  159. want to follow the correct path, regardless of who proposed it.

  161. It is the goal of the charter members to provide an opportunity
  162. for all of us to express our ideas in a censorship free environment,
  163. and by following these guidelines, I hope that it will be possible
  164. to do so.

  171. The OOO believes that awareness of environmental problems and active
  172. involvement in developing and inplementing the solutions 
  173. to those problems are the responsibilities of all people.

  175. Furthermore, the OOO seeks to become a clearinghouse for information
  176. about our environment, and seeks to organize participation in events
  177. to develop this awareness and implement changes.  The OOO is seeking
  178. to refine its stance on the environment - please post suggestions.

  181. Political Platform:
  182.  
  183. The OOO believes that political awareness and involvement are the 
  184. responsibilities of all free-thinking people, and that among the 
  185. OOO's roles in society is to foster said awareness and involvement.
  186.  
  187. To this effect, we are looking for ways to combat the ignorance of
  188. the general populus of the world.  Sugestions for this endeavour 
  189. should be posted.

  192. Anti-War Platform:
  193.  
  194. The OOO believes that demilitarization and world peace should be
  195. striven for by all persons.  Military power should be stricly
  196. controlled by a world organization and be used only to tacitly deter
  197. those actions which would lead to international or intranational
  198. military conflicts. All opinions concerning this subject should be posted.

  201. YOU ARE ALL ENCOURAGED to post your stance on these issues, so
  202. we can have lively discussions.  LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!!
