  11. What is the OOO, you might ask?
  12.  
  13. Basically, we are a group of people (many are college students)
  14. who have formed this really twisted organization.
  15.  
  16. The reason for the name is that we humorously ask our members
  17. to "self-deify" and choose a title for themselves when they
  18. join.  For instance, I am the Director of Physical and Non-physical
  19. Phenomena.  Another member is Arch-chancellor of the Unseen
  20. University.  It is all quite harmless, really.  We do have some
  21. members who also belong to organized religions such as Christianity,
  22. so we are not "ungodly" or blasphemous.
  23.  
  24. Since December, our focus has been to stir up debate on the
  25. issues of the environment, politics, and the military.  The
  26. first issue we discussed was a nuclear test-ban.  Near Jan 1,
  27. the charter members put out a set of "platforms" for people
  28. to debate. For further information on the debates, see the
  29. post "Debate Guidelines."

  43. Your first task as a new member is to pick a title
  44. for yourself.  This title should be as creative as
  45. possible, and should not be in conflict with another
  46. member's title, and also should not be too power-hungry.
  47. All titles must be approved by the charter members.

  50. membership list.  Read through and try to get a feel
  51. for the title concept.

  53. What must you do to become a member?  Well, just pick
  54. a title for yourself, and send mail to
  55. jester@sage.cc.purdue.edu telling him your title, real name,
  56. and shoe size.

  58. The OOO attempts to be somewhat politically active,
  59. so please try to get involved in the debates (see
  60. the post entitled "Debate Guidlines" for more info).
  61. Also, try to read the YAQOTD posts (Yet Another
  62. Quote Of The Day) - not only are they funny, but
  63. they may contain other important information from
  64. jester.

  66. About E-mail: members don't mind getting E-mail from
  67. you if it's directed to them, but don't send mail to
  68. everyone - that's what this newsgroup is for!
  69.  
  70. In the past, long .sigs have been shunned, but with
  71. a newsgroup (rather than a mailing list) they are
  72. probably more apt to be tolerated!

  74. Now, a little bit of OOO trivia (which is far from trivial,
  75. and you ought to know these things!):

  77. The Line of Succession: In the new world order which the
  78. OOO has created, power is on a first-come, first-served
  79. basis.  You will be assigned a number which represents
  80. your "height" on the pyramid.  Those above you are more
  81. powerful than yourself, those below you less so (in some
  82. abstract sense).  HOWEVER, the final authority IN ALL
  83. MATTERS lies with the three charter members.

  85. Recruitment: Please recruit as many people as possible!
  86. In order to sign someone up, have them read alt.overlords
  87. for a while, and get a sense of the organization.  If they
  88. want to join, have them follow the same process you are!
  89.  
  90. NOTE: We are no longer keeping track of who recruits who -
  91. it is just too tedious for the accountants!

  129. For those of you who are FTP buffs, there is an anonymous
  130. FTP directory set up on cco.caltech.edu called pub/bjmccall/
  131. which has some interesting stuff, including a spiffy Mac-ized
  132. version of the OOO symbol with a decent-looking eye.

  139. To carry on the debates that will hopefully take place on
  140. the newsgroup we ask that the following guidelines be followed.
  141.  
  142.   1.  That you read the articles pertaining to a specific debate
  143. before jumping in to give your opinion.  What you have to say
  144. may have already been said, and repetition is not appreciated.
  145.  
  146.   2.  That if you want to attack specific points in another
  147. article, that you print who has said them.  It will allow
  148. the debates to proceed more smoothly.
  149.  
  150.   3.  If you present ideas which are not your own, such as
  151. from alternate newsgroups, reference sources, etc. that you
  152. make all possible effort to give credit to the source.
  153. This is mostly to allow the rest of the organization to do
  154. their own research on the subject.
  155.  
  156.   4.  Though this will probably not happen, do not let personal 
  157. bias against another member influence your reaction or opinion.  We
  158. want to follow the correct path, regardless of who proposed it.

  160. It is the goal of the charter members to provide an opportunity
  161. for all of us to express our ideas in a censorship free environment,
  162. and by following these guidelines, I hope that it will be possible
  163. to do so.

  168. Environmental Platform:

  170. The OOO believes that awareness of environmental problems and active
  171. involvement in developing and inplementing the solutions 
  172. to those problems are the responsibilities of all people.
  173.  
  174. Furthermore, the OOO seeks to become a clearinghouse for information
  175. about our environment, and seeks to organize participation in events
  176. to develop this awareness and implement changes.  The OOO is seeking
  177. to refine its stance on the environment - please post suggestions.

  180. Political Platform:
  181.  
  182. The OOO believes that political awareness and involvement are the 
  183. responsibilities of all free-thinking people, and that among the 
  184. OOO's roles in society is to foster said awareness and involvement.
  185.  
  186. To this effect, we are looking for ways to combat the ignorance of
  187. the general populus of the world.  Sugestions for this endeavour 
  188. should be posted.

  191. Anti-War Platform:
  192.  
  193. The OOO believes that demilitarization and world peace should be
  194. striven for by all persons.  Military power should be stricly
  195. controlled by a world organization and be used only to tacitly deter
  196. those actions which would lead to international or intranational
  197. military conflicts. All opinions concerning this subject should be posted.

  200. YOU ARE ALL ENCOURAGED to post your stance on these issues, so
  201. we can have lively discussions.  LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!!
