-
- While it is possible to alter perceptions under hypnosis, there seems to
- be no indication that you don't "know" (at least at some level) what's
- going on. It's not uncommon for people to discuss perception-altering
- suggestions in phrases like, "I knew it was there, and I could've seen
- it, but I just didn't want to look at it." I don't think simply
- suggesting that the gun isn't a gun, or that the beloved dog is a tiger,
- is going to do the trick - the deeper mind may seem naive at times, but
- it's not stupid.
-
- On the other hand, I've never attempted a situation like that, so I
- could be wrong. If I were going about it, though, I think I'd start
- with working on the person's feelings for the dog - maybe suggest they
- don't like the dog, bring up examples of when the dog may have hurt
- them, maybe suggest the dog needs to be put out of its misery - that
- sort of thing. Hypnosis seems to be much more effective in dealing
- with mental constructs (such as motivations and beliefs). Do it right,
- and the person might even feel good about it afterwards.
-
- Of course, I would never condone that sort of use of hypnosis, and I
- strongly suspect that it still wouldn't work. But stranger things have
- happened.
