- Lev. 17:11: "For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given
- it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; IT IS THE BLOOD
- THAT MAKES ATONEMENT FOR ONE'S LIFE."
-
- MB> Until the Temple was destroyed in A.D. 70, Jewish teaching emphasized
- the necessity of blood atonement. According to the Talmud, "There is
- not atonement (kapparah) without the blood" (Yoma 51; Zebahim 6a;
- Menahot 93b).
-
- But after there was no temple, Jews who didn't accept Yeshua as the
- sacrifice were in troubles... Rav Yochanan ben Zakkai was walking
- with Rav Joshua when the latter saw the Temple in ruins. He cried out:
-
- "Woe to us that this is in ruins -- the place where the sins of
- Israel were expiated !" Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai replied: "My
- son, be not grieved, we have a means of atonement that is
- commensurate with it. Which is this ? It is the performance of
- acts of lovingkindness, as it is said, 'For I delight in loyalty
- rather than sacrifice' [Hosea 6:6]." (Avot de Rabbi Nathan 4:18)
-
- Thus teaching against Scriptures was considered better than accepting the
- sacrifice of Yeshua. Furthermore, there were signs that implied that
- God didn't even accept the temple sacrifices anymore, like that a cord
- stopped turning white and the doors of the temple started opening by
- themselves.
-
- Yet even the disciples of Yeshua continued doing the sacrifices as
- ordered in Torah until the destruction of the temple. The relationship
- between animal sacrifices and the Lamb that God provided can be seen
- so that Yeshua is the ultimate meaning of the whole sacrificial system.
- Thus even before him all sacrifices were merely symbolic; they couldn't
- take away the sins, only turn away the wrath of God. The longing for
- the Redeemer, who would restore our relationship with God, is seen e.g.
- in the book of Job.
-
- Job 19:25: "I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will
- stand upon the earth/my grave."
