  12. Have a look at the news.* newsgroups.  Every month a summary is
  13. posted of all kinds of statistics: # of articles, # of readers,
  14. traffic flow by site, etc etc.  Everything you could imagine
  15. when dreaming of a beancounter-on-methamphetamine who just
  16. learned how to program in C++ :-).

  18. The news software at each site, looks at each user's .newsrc
  19. file.  It sees which groups are subscribed to, and counts
  20. that person as a "reader" if s/he is subscribed to that
  21. group.  It's imprecise but (in my opinion) only overestimates
  22. by 1.5 to 2X at most.

  24. There are hundreds of thousands of users at sites that carry
  25. news feeds, so 13,000 is not surprising; I would bet that
  26. the most popular newsgroup (alt.politics.abortion) has
  27. 200,000 readers.
