  12. I have recently received a flood of requests for personal advice
  13. and information about learning hypnosis; I've responded to each,
  14. but there is a pattern in my responses that I can share with all.

  16. 1.  I do not believe that you can learn effective (and ethical)
  17.   hypnosis from books.  There are skills (like pacing your words
  18.   to the subjects breathing, using tonality to mark out certain
  19.   words to form other messages that what is apparent to the casual
  20.   listener, like how to match the client's experience) than you can
  21.   read about all day and never learn a thing.  If you want to "play"
  22.   with hypnosis, go to the library and read what they have; you'll
  23.   learn enough to do elementary things and find out whether hypnosis
  24.   is a subject you really want to learn.

  26. 2.  While I "do" hypnosis, my primary training is in Neuro-Linguistic
  27.   Programming (NLP).  NLP is an application of hypnosis, and a way
  28.   of understanding behavior and communication, of which hypnosis is
  29.   one part.  While hypnosis might seem mysterious, NLP makes it quite
  30.   obvious and open (with sufficient practice).  I recommend you in-
  31.   vestigate it as a field of study.

  33. 3.  To find someone to teach you hypnosis, I recommend two sources:
  34.   a.  Look under "Hypnosis" in the Yellow Pages; call them and see
  35.       if they're willing to help you learn, or if they can refer you
  36.       to someone who will.
  37.   b.  There are numerous "New Age" periodicals, underground news-
  38.       papers, etc. where people with esoteric skills often announce
  39.       themselves; call those people and ask where you can learn.

  41. 4.  I am not willing to outline specific strategies for hypnosis for
  42.   ethical reasons:  I have a responsibility to the unknown "subjects"
  43.   that might be exposed to those strategies, and I have no way to judge
  44.   the ethics of the people who might read this newsgroup and apply them
  45.   in harmful ways.

  47. 5.  I am located in Silicon Valley (San Jose, CA), and I am a Trainer
  48.   (as well as Certified Practitioner and Certified Master Practitioner)
