- Given ambiguities which attend _homophobe_ through much public discourse now
- (for many, it means simply "disapproval of lesbigays," with no residual
- reference to 'phobia'), I find myself depending increasingly on ~heterosexist~
- and its related term, ~heterosexism~.
-
- ~Homophobia~ focuses on intent, and on intent at the often subconscious level.
- Phobias are not easily remedied. My aunt may know intellectually that she
- will not die from the germs she wipes off every door knob with rubbing alcohol,
- but she wipes them off relentlessly. We do not despise or even dislike her for
- this phobia: we pity her.
-
- ~Heterosexism~ denotes unjust participation in systems of heteroprivilege,
- regardless of whether one created the privilege and regardless of whether one
- has even analyzed the gains as ill-gotten. Heterosexists are often personally
- kind to lesbigay people: they can dine with us in their own homes, enjoy
- our art, praise us publicly, but remain silent when the bigots
- deny us equal justice.
-
- It's not the person who shouts "Faggot!" who does me the gravest harm: it's
- the colleague who lifts not a 29-cent stamp to complain when my spouse is
- denied the same staff benefits as hers or his......
