- Fooled By Dreams
- ================
-
- Where does one start? "What Starts, Ends" is what the album cover tells us.
- Hmmm... Does that mean that I should stop now. No, I shall not be that easy on
- you. First Point: This is not 'The Fields of the Nephilim'!! OK for all those
- Neph fans that may have been disappointed we have got that cleared up. I have
- heard some say: "Oh they sound like Pearl Jam..". I won't even retort to that.
- However even having been a Neph fan for a number of years(and awaiting Carls'
- NeFilim impatiently)I love this album.
-
- Rubicon were awaited with a dull ache of anticipation for a while until their
- debut British gig in the Marquee Club, London in June. This put minds, if
- not to rest, at least to understanding. Many a Goth have already written them
- off to be a sell out, rock band. They are however much more! Rubicon have
- fans to win, and audiences to scare and given time they will do so.
-
- The band(ex-Nephilim) with new singer Andy Delany have (in my humble opinion)
- created a beautiful black sound. It is dark and haunting, and crazed and
- violent. Although not #gothic# it is most definately music of the night. The
- album has an ethereal yet cutting guitar sound. At times I hear Dawnrazor
- and others Elyzium but to be honest the music has matured an awful lot since
- then. These are songs that the Nephs would never have produced(Thank God!).
- The album is balanced between slow, thoughtful numbers with harsh 'Get the
- Fuck out of your seat' songs too. The second single from the album (Crazed/Brave
- Hearts) is, for me, the highlight of the album, which could be construed as
- a negative statement. I realise this. It is unusual for a band to put two of
- their strongest songs on one single yet they have taken that risk to their
- advantage. The rest of the album cannot help but grow on you too.
-
- The artwork is nice too(reminiscent of Moonchild era) with a sun dial and
- hourglass being the central themes on both front and back. Generously we get
- an inner sleve complete with lyrics which is much needed. Delany is a more
- understandable singer yet still with that Je ne sais quoi. I can't really
- compare them with any other band but a must for goths and music lovers alike.
-
- "Unselfish sharing of time love and gold, Endless preparing of food for the soul
- In darkest hours guilt you'll hide, To all you're smiling while pain's inside
-
- Is this what you've been waiting for? "
- Rubicon - Hard for you
